The 2008 California Coastal Rose Show Committee would

like to thank everyone who contributed many hours of hard

work to make this show possible and to the exhibitors for

their exquisite blooms and arrangements.

The CALIFORNIA COASTAL ROSE SOCIETY meetings

are held monthly at Heritage Hall, 2650 Garfield, Carlsbad,

CA on the third Tuesday of each month, at 6:15 and 7:00

pm. No meetings are held in July, August and December.

Each meeting features a program on a subject related to the

rose, presented by a recognized authority. Annual membership

is $20.00 and you will receive our monthly email

newsletter. For more information visit our website,

D i v i s i o n I S h o w R u l e s

1. Entries will be received from 6:30 am until 9:30 am, Saturday,

May 3, 2008. No entries taken after 9:30 am.

2. Judging will be in accordance with current Guidelines for

Judging Roses. The judges decisions are final.

3. Specimen roses must have been grown in the exhibitor’s outdoor,

private garden.

4. Horticulture Judges and members of their families may not enter

specimens, with the exception of Section L, Judges Entries.

5. Classification of roses will be in accordance with the latest edition

of Modern Roses Official List of Approved Exhibition Names

for Judges, Exhibitors Handbook for Selecting Roses, Combined

Rose List, or the New Rose Registration in the American Rose.

All roses must be exhibited under the ARS Exhibition names as

listed in bold type in the ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses.

ARS publications take priority over Combined Rose List.

6. This is an alphabetically arranged show with each variety constituting

a separate class.

7. Exhibitors may make only one entry of the variety in a section.

DUPLICATE ENTRIES WILL DISQUALIFY BOTH.

8. Only Large-flowered Climbers (LCl), Hybrid Wichurana

(HWich) and Hybrid Giganteas (HGig) are to be exhibited in

Class 14. All other climbers must be exhibited in the same class

as their bush counterparts (HT, F, Min, T, etc.)

9. Each exhibitor must be registered and use an official ARS entry

tag. Only ARS entry tags may be used. Complete ONLY the

upper half of the tag including name and address. Use blue or

black pen. (No felt tips please.) No exhibitor numbers needed.

10. Wedging may be used. If wedging material protrudes above the

lip of the vase, the specimen will be penalized. Wedging must

allow the addition of water to the exhibit.

11. ARS rules governing disqualification will be strictly adhered to

including misnamed, misplaced, misclassed, mislabeled or unlabeled,

stem-on-stem (except old garden roses and shrubs), side

buds, presence of a foreign substance, entries in violation of ARS

or show rules, or without an approved exhibition name.

12. The placement committee will place all roses except for challenge

classes. No unauthorized people in the show area.

13. All exhibits become property of CCRS.

14. Trophies will be awarded at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

Winners should be present to accept awards. Exhibitors wishing

to have ribbons must pick them up on May 3, 2008. RIBBONS

WILL NOT BE MAILED.

15. Section K, Classes 49 through 53 are open only to members of

CCRS.

16. Any exhibit with more than one stem must be arranged by the

exhibitor. ALL EXHIBITS MUST REPRESENT ONLY THE

EXHIBITOR’S WORK.

Class 19 Genesis - One bloom or spray of any type old garden

rose designated as ‘Sp’ Species in ARS Handbook for

Selecting Roses. Award: Trophy & ARS Certificate

Class 20 Dowager - One bloom or spray of any variety of rose in

existence prior to 1867. Award: Trophy & ARS Cert.

Class 21 Victorian - One bloom or spray introduced in 1867 or

after. Award: Trophy & ARS Certificate

Class 22 Bouquet - Any type of Old Garden Rose, one or more

varieties, 9 or more blooms or sprays. Must be grown

and arranged by exhibitor. Exhibitor to furnish own container.

Class 35 Miniature Artist’s Palette Five different Mini or Mini-

Floras using five different color classes. No stem or

foliage, with or without sepals. Palettes furnished by society.

Class 36 Cycle of Bloom - One variety, any type. Three stems:

one fully open, one ½ to ¾ open and one bud showing

color with sepals down. One bloom per stem without side

buds in one vase Award: Trophy

Class 37 Big and Little Look Alike - One large bloom (any type)

and one miniature or mini-flora bloom, shown in separate

vases. Except for size, the roses must look similar in

appearance. Award: Trophy & ARS Certificate

blend, any variety. Award: Keeper Trophy

Class 50 Charles Billingsley Trophy - Three yellow hybrid teas

in one container. Award: Keeper trophy donated by

Alan and Geri McCarron

Class 51 Grider Founders Trophy - One hybrid tea or grandiflora.

Award: Waterford Crystal Keeper Trophy donated

by Alan and Geri McCarron

Class 52 Willits Family Trophy - Features the rose Camara –

One bloom. Award: Keeper Trophy

Class 53 Gwen Cleary Memorial Trophy - Heritage Roses.

Three stems of pink or white in any combination. Show

in one container provided by society. Keeper Trophy

donated by Gwen Cleary Memorial Gift to CCRS.

(Class 54-57 are open to everyone.)

Class 54 “Micro Minis are Roses too” - Minimum three

blooms of a micro miniature rose (singles or spray), may

mix varieties in one vase provided by exhibitor. Award:

Keeper Trophy

Class 55 Del Mar Rose Society Trophy - Three blooms or

sprays to include one Hybrid Tea, one Floribunda and

one Heritage Rose, any form, in one container provided

by society. Award: Keeper Trophy

Class 56 Grand Canyon Suite - Five HTs and/or GRs, each a

different variety, displayed in one container. To be

selected from color classes yellow, red, orange or blends

of same and orange-pink, Gemini may be included, to

highlight colors of the Southwest. Judged 70 percent

form and 30 percent blend of colors. Sponsored by Alan

and Geri McCarron. Award: $50.00

Class 57 Tin Can - All of your roses that did not make it to the

other classes arranged in a disposable non returnable

container, i.e. milk carton, coffee can, etc. Roses will be

donated to a local Hospice Center after the show. Thank

you for your participation! Award: Keeper Trophy

Division II - Arrangements Rules

Design - 30 Points Balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion,

scale

Perfection of the Rose(s) - 30 points Including condition of other

plant material

Creativity and Expressiveness - 15 points

Distinction - 10 Points Unique, sets the design apart, superiority in

every respect, includes technical execution/construction.

1. Entries accepted from 6:30 am to 9:30 am. Any arranger in the

exhibiting room after last call before judging will be disqualified.

2. Exhibitors must register. Arrangements must be set up & placed by

the exhibitor only. Entries must remain until the close of the show.

3. Exhibitor is limited to one entry per class. Each entry must be the

exhibitor’s own work & not have been displayed in another show.

4. Members of the same household may enter each class as long as

they individually create each arrangement.

5. All roses must be outdoor grown, of high quality and be the dominant

flower. Roses should be correctly named and listed on the

entry tags. The ARS Medal Certificates will only be awarded to

arranger grown entries, therefore, all entries with arranger grown

roses must be identified as such by placing ‘AG’ on the upper right

corner of the entry tag

6. Unless otherwise stated, accessories are allowed. Bases will be

considered part of the arrangement. Accessories and flowers other

than roses and dried and/or treated dried plant material are allowed

unless prohibited by the schedule. The arrangements will be placed

on long, open tables. Arrangements may not be moved by anyone

except the arranger or the chairman of arrangements.

7. All miniature arrangements must use roses classified by ARS as

miniature or mini-flora.

8. Trophies will awarded to the purple ribbon winner of each class and

must have a score of 90 or better. ARS Medal Certificates will only

be awarded to the best entries to achieve a score of 92 or greater.

9. California Coastal Rose Society will not be held responsible for

exhibits. We strongly encourage arrangers to place their name on all

accessories not noticeable to the judges. The arranger shall pick up

or arrange to have their entries picked up at the end of the show.

10. Trophies will be awarded at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

Arrangers should be present or make arrangements for someone to

pick up their trophies. California Coastal Rose Society cannot be

held responsible for unclaimed trophies or arrangements.

11. The Arrangement Division shall be judged according to the rules

and procedures outlined in the ARS Guideline for Judging Rose

Arrangements. The decisions of the judges are final.

12. Care should be exercised when preparing arrangements in the show

area. ALLWATER AND TRASH AROUND YOUR AREAMUST

BE CLEANED UP OR DISQUALIFICATION COULD OCCUR.

13. ARS causes for disqualification of an arrangement are:

A) Roses are not outdoor grown

B) Use of artificial plant material.

14. Penalty: 1. Painted or dyed fresh plant material or use of live creatures

are not allowed. 2. Use of plant material on state conservation

list not permitted 3. Use of any country flags are not

permitted.

15. Reservations are strongly encouraged and kindly requested for all

A tribute to Jane Austin (1775-1817), one of the best loved British writers

of all time.

Class 2 “Bridal Chorus” Line Mass From the opera ‘Lohengrin’

by German composer Richard Wagner, the standard march played for

the bride's entrance at most formal weddings

Section B - Modern

Best in Section: ARS Artist Award and Trophy

Class 3 “Somewhere in Time” A modern design featuring

a pocket watch, time piece or clock in the design.

Inspired by the 1980 romantic movie, “The most romantic love story

ever filmed”.

Class 4 “The Kiss” Modern Design using two containers.

Section C - Oriental Manner

Best in Section: ARS Oriental Award and Trophy

Class 5 “Gone with the Wind” Low Container

Class 8 “Candle Light Romance” Roses with dried and/or

treated plant material. NO FRESH PLANT MATERIAL

EXCEPT ROSES. Arrangers’ choice. Type of design

must be noted on entry tag.

Section E - Duke

Best in Section: ARS Duke of Arrangements Award and Trophy

Class 9 “Wine and Roses” An arrangement greater than 10

inches, but not to exceed 20 inches in height, width or

depth. Arrangers Choice. Type of design must be noted

on entry tag.

Section F - Novice

Best in Section: ARS Novice Certificate and Trophy

Open only to those who have won no more than 3 first-place arrangement ribbons

or a trophy in any ARS show. Design type must be noted on entry tag.

Class 10 “Romeo and Juliet” Standard Rose Arrangement

Class 11 “Moonlight Dance” Miniature Rose Arrangement

Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth.

Section G - Miniature Traditional

Best in Section: ARS Miniature Royalty Award and Trophy

Class 12 “How do I Love Thee?” Miniature Mass

Not to exceed 5 inches in height, width or depth.

Arrangers Choice. Famous poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

(1806 - 1861).

Class 13 “Eros” Miniature Line Mass

Must be greater than 5 inches but not to exceed 10 inches

in height, width or depth. Greek God of Love and Passion.

Section H - Miniature Modern

Best in Section: ARS Miniature Artist Award and Trophy

Class 14 “Cupid's Target” AModern Design

Accessories permitted. Not to exceed 10” in height,

width or depth. The Roman god of love and son of Venus. Cupid is

a small, winged boy, blindfolded, carrying bow and arrows. To whom

he strikes, falls in love.

Section I - Miniature Oriental Manner

Best in Section: ARS Miniature Oriental Award and Trophy

Class 15 “Star-Crossed Lovers”

Not to exceed 5 inches in height, width or depth. The

phrase was coined in the prologue of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Class 16 “Unchained Melody” Freestyle Design

Greater that 5 inches but not to exceed 10 inches in

height, width or depth. The Righteous Brothers 1965 version of

this romantic song.

Section J - Miniature Duchess of Arrangements

Using fresh roses with dried and/or treated dried plant

material. No Fresh plant material other than roses.

Best in Section: ARS Miniature Duchess Award & Trophy

Class 17 “Pearls and Lace” Arranger’s choice

Not to exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Type

of design must be noted on entry tag.

Section K - Miniature Princess of Arrangements

Best in Section: ARS Mini Princess of Arrangements Award and

Trophy

Class 18 “Saint Valentine’s Day” Arranger’s choice

Using roses with rose foliage, hips, canes and roots.

Only fresh rose materials may be used. No other plant

materials or accessories are permitted
